Sonagiri is a conglomeration of 84 Jain Temples built on a hill. This place is one of the most important Jain Pilgrimage places in India and surely deserves to be that, considering the amazingly religious and peaceful atmosphere.
Sonagiri is located at 10 km from Datia on the Gwalior-Jhansi road. The road is undergoing a process of renovation and will soon be a wonderful 4-lane Highway. You can also reach Sonagiri by rail. You will have to catch a passenger train from Gwalior or Jhansi station, or catch one of the seasonal trains if you are planning to visit in the festive season.
It is said that Jain King Nanganang Kumar and his group of saints meditated on this hill for a very long time, until they reached their salvation. They left behind a few small temples and in the coming, devotees kept making more temples until the number reached 84.
The temple complex of Sonagiri is based on a hill. At the base of this hill is the small town of Sonagiri, which is mainly populated by people catering to tourists’ and pilgrims’ needs.
Being a Jain Temple complex, you will not be allowed to take any leather accessories like shoes, belts, wallets, mobile covers etc inside and so it is better to leave those in the car. Once you are inside and you can start climbing the hill and as you do that, you will get to see many of the temples on the way itself.
Some of these temples are off the way and so you will have to do some walking around if you want to see all of them. All the temples are similar in design and all of them are cleanly colored white. The only difference between the temples is the size, which ranges from as small to 3-4 feet across to 15-20 ft.
Once you reach on the top, you will be able to get a panoramic view of all the temples. The scene is very beautiful indeed.
All the temples being white in color look like pearls set in brownish-green blanket. You can sit there for a while and enjoy the atmosphere.
There are many temples to visit and thus there is a lot to do in Sonagiri, for a curious tourist.
