When will my Eclectus parrot start talking?

My Solomon Island Eclectus parrot is 7 mos old. I talk to him all the time. No peep (no pun intended) out of him yet. The only sound I've ever heard him make is while he was sitting on the window ledge, someone walked by and scared him and he squawked. But that's it.

When do they start talking?

  1. Some never talk but give it a few more months.

  2. Usually words and sounds can start emerging at about a year

Eclectus parrots are able to mimic the human voice very well. If the birds have been raised intelligently, in other words, if they have been given a good selection of toys at an early age, they can use words and sentences in ways to communicate with their care givers. Although sometimes young Eclectus will “sing” in the morning to express their well being, they usually won’t start talking until at least 1 year of age. The best way to encourage them to talk is to speak to them, using their name often.

  3. Ecelctus are considered to be great talkers, although some choose to never say a word.

Each individual is different, he might start talking in a few weeks, a few months, a few years.

Parrots learn words fastest when they are excited. When you walk into the room (that’s why so many learn ‘hello’ first), when you give him food he likes, when you are playing, etc.

When you say words to him, see if he is listening to you and his eyes are pinning. If he’s not listening, he might not be interested in learning that particular word.
They are more likely to learn words that are said in an enthusiastic or interesting tone (that’s why they tend to pick up on swearing). As well as a higher pitched tone, at the same level as their own voice (rather than words said in a deep, low voice).

  4. At 7 months old you shouldn’t be expecting mirricles. He’s still a baby.

Generally at around 4-7 months they start to pick up sounds & noises & mimic things. This age does vary depending on the bird though, some are very late starters. By 1 year old they start saying clear words. After about 1 year old they start to think for themselves. They watch & observe their surrounding very closely & teach themselves words, phrases & how appropriate times to say things, so be careful what you say.

Now not all eclectus parrots like to talk. There is the occasional one that will never say a word.

How long have you had him for? It can take ekkies some months to settle into their new home & get used to their new surroundings so give him the time he needs also.

Do you have toys that make sound? I found toddler toys are fantastic for them as they make all kinds of noises that interest ekkies & encourage them to start using their voice. Also make the words sound interesting. An ekkie will never be interested in any word that sounds boring or dull. My ekkie says every word with gusto cos that’s how we taught him LOL

You will know when he takes an interest in what you say. They’re very comical in the way they take interest! My guy just about shoves his eyeball in my mouth to watch when I say something that takes his interest LOL
What sub species do you have?
